Guest Blogger: Hannah Warner ’17, a TWRG e-board officer–
Third Wave Resource Group (TWRG) serves as an on-campus resource for activism and support for third wave feminism on campus and in the surrounding community. We are activists who examine issues of race, gender, sexuality, and socioeconomic class through a feminist lens.
TWRG is a Cornell Living and Learning Community as well, so eight members live in Harlan House and organize the events, volunteer work, and programming for TWRG. These eight students go through domestic violence and sexual assault advocacy training with the Riverview Center and Waypoint Services. We serve as student advocates on campus, and we have access to a safe room for anyone who needs a safe, confidential place to stay during a time of crisis. This room is fully furnished with a bed, toiletries, and anything else you might need during a stay.
The eight students living in Harlan for the 2015-16 school year are: April Richards, Bailey Robb, Eliza Smith, Hannah Warner, Alex DeSena, Vanessa Iraheta, Marissa DeMeritt, and Missy Drew. TWRG’s Social Liaisons, Stacey Harrison and Hayley McKie (former residents of Harlan House), will work as members of the team too.
TWRG maintains a resource library at Harlan House, with books focusing on feminist issues and other topics that can be checked out by anyone on campus. The kitchen in the house is open to students for use, and it is equipped with most items you would need to cook and bake. We have a large selection of crafting items for any school, organization, or art projects students may have, ranging from glitter and stickers to fabric and sewing materials.
Harlan House is the only place on campus to provide free condoms, dental dams, and lubricants. These can be found on Harlan’s entryway table as well as pamphlets on domestic violence and sexual assault recovery and contact information for local women’s shelters Waypoint (Domestic Violence Advocacy) and Riverview (Sexual Assault Advocacy).
Weekly TWRG meetings are held on Mondays at 4:30pm in Harlan House. Our meetings are discussion based, and we often talk about current issues on campus and in the media. Keep an eye out for our beginning of the year BBQ held at the house!
Harlan House is at a NEW location this year and we hear the house is lovely! Find it on the west side of campus, right by Guppy’s. Like TWRG’s Facebook page for group updates and more info.
