Deadline: April 5, 2013

Description: Students will be placed in a research laboratory at the Carver College of Medicine or School of Public Health.
Timeframe: Summer 2013, Fall 2013, Spring 2014

Deadline: April 5, 2013

Description: The African American Museum of Iowa provides quality educational programming to students and adults throughout Iowa. The Education Intern will assist the Director of Education and Assistant Educator with this programming by using the museum’s library to research topics presented in the museum and then help Education staff with guided tours, workshops, and public programs. The African American Museum of Iowa lends Traveling Trunks filled with books, artifacts, and lesson plans about African American history to area organizations. Intern will have two duties: assessing current traveling trunks and designing new ones. To assess current trunks, interns will examine the items/information in existing trunks and research their authenticity. To design new trunks, interns will use the museum’s library and other resources to gather information on Iowa’s African American history and present it in a way that will be useful to teachers.

Interest in working with children and adults in a professional setting is a must.

sustainable materials and life-cycle costs (including recycling and purchasing)

green buildings and environmental friendly designs for new construction

reduction of the carbon footprint of University-related transportation and travel

integration of sustainability into the academic mission of the UI

Depending on their areas of interest, a Fellow may work in one of the areas below related to the Office of Sustainability’s 2020 Vision Statement:

Achieve Net-negative Energy Growth

Green Our Energy Portfolio

The Fellow may be asked to attend meetings of the relevant campus committees and liaison with various campus departments and/or student groups as appropriate.

Students who are particularly interested in writing may, alternatively, be involved in website and blog management and development. Students who complete the Fellowship in March and April of 2013 will have the opportunity to be involved in the planning and execution of Earth Month activities.

The successful applicant will be an excellent writer and speaker with strong conceptual skills. The applicant should show a demonstrated interest in sustainability and coursework relevant to the tasks to be completed. The Fellowship is available in Terms 3-8 of the 2012-2013 academic year, and the student must apply at least two terms prior to the desired starting date.

Students who are interested in the Cornell Fellowship in Sustainability should contact the Faculty Director of the Cornell Fellows Program, Suzette Astley, with an indication of the area of interest. She can provide further information about the specific work to be done in each area outlined above for inclusion in the student’s application.
