Description: The African American Museum of Iowa applies for many grants and organizes several fundraisers each year to fund our exhibits, programming, and staff.  Intern will work with the Development Director on several different projects relating to development/fundraising and marketing/public relations.  Intern will have the opportunity to work on grant applications and will be involved in planning for summer and fall 2013 AAMI events.  Intern will also grow the AAMI’s media lists and work on increasing knowledge of the AAMI in communities were the AAMI is doing summer programming.

Intern must be professional, have strong writing/communications skills, and would preferably have an interest in non-profits or the arts.

CORNELL FELLOW IN LABOR RELATIONS

Location: Iowa City, IA

Timeframe: Fall 2013, Spring 2014

Description: The Center’s mission is to “provide educational programs and research support to Iowa’s working people and their organizations.”  The Labor Center was established in 1951 by action of the Iowa Legislature, and it provides a bridge between the University and the labor community in Iowa.

Cornell Fellows can work on one of three projects currently underway at the Center.  Each project involves collaboration with one or more community organizations.

  • Establishment of a Worker’s Justice Center.
  • Immigrant Voices Project.
  • Iowa Worker Oral History Project.

Applications should indicate a specific project from those listed above.  In addition to strong abilities in speaking, writing, and conceptualization, a successful applicant will have a strong interest in issues of concern to workers or labor history.   For the Immigrant Voices Project, fluency in Spanish is a requirement.  For the Iowa Worker Oral History Project, the applicant should have background in American History, specifically regarding the labor movement, and some experience with oral history techniques.

Description: The fellow will work on a project related to either administration or production aspects of 1st Stage. Administrative areas include: Management, Fundraising and Development, Education – Community Programs, Education – School Programs, Graphic Design, Public Relations/Marketing, Dramaturgy, Casting and Actor Preparation, Box Office and Front-of-House Management. Production areas include: Production Design, Costumes, Lighting, Production Management, Sound, Stage Management

SMALL FELLOW IN MUSEUM STUDIES (Research/Exhibitions)

Description: The African American Museum of Iowa has a changing exhibit space that is rotated annually. The Research Intern will assist the Curator with accumulation of information for Behind the Beat, an exhibition on the African American influence on music over the past 200 years.  Using the research compiled, intern will then assist with label and text writing, artifact selection, loaned artifact coordination, and exhibition design.

Basic history background will be very helpful to this internship.  Strong research and writing skills are essential.  Intern must provide a writing sample when requesting placement.
