The Art of the Book at Cornell: Yesteryear to Tomorrow

February 25th, 2011

Opening Reception: Monday, February 28, 4:30-6:00 pm

This new exhibit of student book art at Cole Library draws materials from three different sources within Cornell’s English department.

Handmade books are from Professor Katy Stavreva’s course, English 321, Medieval Literature: Dante from Block 8 of year 2010-11. To take a close look at this book art, complete with the feel of turning book pages, visit their electronic editions of the books at http://issuu.com/toryrw.

The SURGE! manifesto was made by students in Professor Hankins’ English 212, English Survey II course taught in Block 6 of year 2010. It was accompanied by a mock avant-garde video, The W’s Are Missing! (a ticket for the film is on display).

Chapbooks and brochures for the exhibit are from the archival collection of the Department of English and Creative Writing, the private collection of Professor Leslie Kathleen Hankins, and the Cole Library Archives.

William Fletcher KingA portrait of President William Fletcher King. King became president at 32 (Cornell’s youngest) and was president from 1863-1908 (Cornell’s longest serving president). He began his relationship with Cornell in 1862 as a Latin instruction and was a member of the Board of Trustees until his death in 1921. During the Civil War, King traveled to the front lines to solicit donations from Iowa regiments to fund scholarships for disabled veterans. For more information about King, check out Reminiscences, by William Fletcher King or Cornell College: A Sesquicentennial History.

For more about the College presidents, a display will be going up in Cole Library early next week–stay tuned!
